イギリスの児童文学作家フィリパ•ピアスのデビュー作「ハヤ号セイ川をいく」の新訳が3月25日に岩波少年文庫から出版されます。
アーディゾーニのモノクロの挿絵を活用した、カバーの彩色デザインを担当いたしました。
『トムは真夜中の庭で』をはじめ、数々の岩波少年文庫を読んで育ち、ロンドンでアーディゾーニに私淑した私にとって、
まさに夢のようなお話を頂いたのは、クリスマスの朝のことでした。
「ピアスの世界観とアーディゾーニの絵を色彩で繋ぐ」。
この愛おしい重さを何と表現したら良いのか！
アーディゾーニの絵本や挿絵を一度でも目にされた方はお分かりになるかと思いますが、彼の描く線は魔法のような代物で、
白黒であっても、光と影、風や温度、登場人物の気持ちを、あたたかな躍動感で鮮やかに描き出します。
生半可な気持ちでは筆を入れられない、と確信しましたし、水彩も巧みに扱ったアーディゾーニですから、
挿絵画家として、この仕事を1番したかったのは、アーディゾーニ自身だと思いました。
だからこそ私に出来ることは、ピアスが創り上げた世界と原田勝先生が紡がれる言葉に心の底から向き合うこと、
アーディゾーニのように「挿絵画家」の気持ちで物語に寄り添うこと、そして、彼の代わりではなく、私自身のこころで色を生み出すことでした。
多くは語りませんが、素晴らしい物語です。
誰の心にもある、たった一つの「あの夏」。
出会いと冒険、喜びと悲しみを分かち合って、一緒に幸せになること。
そして、置いた色の一つ一つに意味があります。
読み終えれば、きっと見えてきます。
「さあ、ぼくらの宝さがしの始まりだ」
3月25日刊行です！
製作にあたり、絶え間なくインスピレーションを与えてくださったお二人、
岩波書店児童書編集部 宮村彩子さま、翻訳者の原田勝先生。そして、遠くイギリスにいる恩師 Martin Ursellと Aldous Eveleigh に、心からの感謝と尊敬をこめて。
The new Japanese translation of Minnow on the Say, the debut novel by British children’s author Philippa Pearce, will be published on March 25 by Iwanami Shoten.
I had the great honor of designing the cover, adding watercolor to the original monochrome illustrations by Edward Ardizzone.
Having grown up reading many Iwanami children’s classics—especially Tom’s Midnight Garden—and later studying in London inspired by Ardizzone, this project felt truly like a dream.
Ardizzone’s lines are magical. Even in black and white, they convey light and shadow, wind and warmth, and the emotions of the characters with incredible vitality.
My role was not to replace him, but to listen closely to the world created by Pearce and to the beautiful Japanese translation by Mr. Harada—and to bring my own colors to the story.
It is a wonderful tale about that one unforgettable summer we all carry in our hearts—about friendship, adventure, joy, and loss.
Every color has its meaning.
When you finish the story, you may see why.
